Arab Charity

By Cassandra D

When I read about multibillion-dollar, man-made resort islands in Dubai, and then I read that poverty and hopelessness are what fuel terroism, I start wondering where the charities are. Is there an Arab equivalent of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation? Is someone helping to enfranchise the disenfranchised? Or is everything that could lead to economic independence razed to the ground, like the Gaza greenhouses, in an anti-modernity, anti-Israeli, anti-West fervor?

I think it's extremely dangerous to buy the "poverty and misery leads to terrorism" line. If that were true, then North Korea would be filled to the brim with terrorists. Instead, North Korea is filled to the brim with starving humans held in slavery and concentration camps.

One particular culture -- as noted in a post by Chase above -- seems to have a propensity for breeding violent, bloodthirsty minions. Other cultures are not perfect, but one culture seems to have a lock on terrorism.

And we know which culture that is. We need to be willing to have an honest conversation about the fact that culture matters. Cultures breed certain qualities in humans across the millennia -- some ennobling, some leading to a collapse into barbarity.

It is abundantly clear that one culture on this planet is still stuck in 7th century barbarity, and seems intent on remaining there.

As has been noted repeatedly over the past five years, the 9/11 hijackers came from middle-class families. Their nihilist rage was bred by something other than poverty -- and that will continue to be the case.

I’m not sure how anyone can think “one culture seems to have a lock on terrorism.” There are the Basque Separatists in Spain, the IRA in Northern Ireland, Aum Shinrikyo in Japan, just to name a few other groups from diverse cultures. Closer to home, on the right we have Tim McVey and his friends at Elohim City; on the left the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front.

As I've noted before, other cultures have and will breed terrorists, including our own home-grown variety in the form of someone like a McVeigh.

But I think anyone can plainly see that these have not sparked massive global movements of nihilist rage intent on delivering death and destruction for the love of it.

In fact, McVeigh fantasized his act would spark a "Turner Diaries" national revolt. It obviously never happened.

The Basque Separatists, IRA and other examples are groups, that while certainly violent and bloodthirsty, never succeeded in bringing death to 3,000 innocents in a single horrific day. Only one culture has done that.

And that is what I call a lock.

First, to say that "one culture" killed 3,000 in one day makes me think I may have misunderstood your previous comment. I assumed you meant that only one culture is capable of producing terrorists, when perhaps you meant that only one culture is composed entirely of terrorists. No "culture" is responsible for the death of 3,000 people—that blame lies with 19 hijackers and the group that trained and funded them.

Secondly, classification as a “terrorist” has more to do with your methods and motivation than with your body count, as the victims of Belfast car bombs or subway sarin attacks would surely attest. True, other groups have not produced destruction on so large a scale, but then other groups aren’t backed by billions of dollars in oil money, either.

Andrew Sullivan has had some interesting posts on the issue of Islam.
Here's an example:
The Other Islam

Let's be clear....

One culture bred the jihad-based faith that bred the quite friendly environment in which a global movement of nihilist rage and death cultism has thrived and carried out acts of astounding and terrifying mass murder. 9/11, Bali, Madrid, London. Cartoon riots. And more to come. Stay tuned.

Only one other culture I know of produced a similar death-obsessed fascism: Nazi Germany.

Thus the term, Islamo-fascists.

We can go around in circles for days on the point of Basque separatists and IRA car bombers, or for that matter the Weathermen or the Shining Path.

None of them approach worldwide militant Islam in terms of sheer ferocity and love of mayhem.

To pretend otherwise - especially when it's staring us in the face every day - is just playing games of sophistry.
