Rather Have Couric?

At first it was easy to dismiss the rumors that CBS is angling to make Katie Couric Dan Rather's successor when Ditzy Dan steps down this spring. But now Time magazine is reporting that CBS has actually approached Couric about the prospects.

It is becoming increasingly likely that CBS' in-house candidates, John Roberts and Scott Pelley, will be passed up in favor of an attention-grabbing marquee name. Ahh, such is the whimsical world of TV news.

But the logic of something escapes me.

Let's get this straight. CBS, its news division having fallen into the proverbial shitter over credibility, hopes to reclaim its Tiffany Network status by hiring ... Katie Couric?

Hasn't CBS already endured one on-air colonoscopy too many at this point?

Do you have a problem with women Chase? What is so unbelievable about hiring Couric? At least the viewers can TRUST her which is something CBS badly needs. Would you be so critical if it were Matt Lauer?

Nah, I don't have no gripe wid' wimmen. There are plenty of female anchors who I think would be great -- Diane Sawyer or Campbell Brown or even Paula Zahn, just off the top of my head, would be excellent choices. I just can't take Couric seriously, not after so many years of slavish fawning over celebrities. Matt Lauer wouldn't be scoring any credibility points with me, either.

Chase LOVES women. Didn't you read his glowing review of Mariska Hargitay's nipples at the Golden Globes? If Katie would show more nipple, she'd be a shoe in in his book.

What do nipples have to do with the Nightly News? Maybe Chase is a sexist...

Somehow I don't think that showing more nipple would make anyone take Katie Couric more seriosly. And, by the way, Chase called her "Couric" while a previous Anonymous called her "Katie," which I think indicates that Chase already views her with less sexism than Anonymous. Why is it that it is "Rather" and "Brokaw" and even "Matt Lauer" but Katie Couric becomes "Katie"? Will we be calling her "Darlin" next?

if they are going to break the bank and wait out other people's contracts, why not Tim Russert?

I think Katie's a little darlin and if she'd wear her "smart" glasses more often she'd be a great anchor. They just read off a teleprompter anyway, how hard could it be? She can read can't she?
