Sporting Woody

Happy birthday to Woody Allen. Long before he began schtupping his stepdaughter, long before his movies became embarrassingly irrelevant vanity projects, there was a period of about 12 years when he was America's foremost filmmaker. So here's to you, Woodman, yah lovable neurotic perv.

Oh, and just because I can: Here's my wholly subjective list of my five favorite Woody Allen flicks, in ascending order. (Post yours in the comments section if you would like).

5. Zelig
4. Hannah and Her Sisters
3. Manhattan
2. Crimes and Misdemeanors
1. Annie Hall

"Embarrassingly irrelevant vanity projects," indeed. So why do keep going to see every single one of them!?!? For my money, Curse of the Jade Scorpion was the most authentically funny thing he's done in the last decade. For what it's worth, here is this huge fan's list of top 5 Woody films:

5. Deconstructing Harry
4. Love and Death
3. Manhattan
2. Stardust Memories
1. Crimes and Misdemeanors

One other thought; is Woody Allen the only important American filmmaker who did much of his best work in the 1980s?

My top five, apparently alphabetized:

Annie Hall
Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex
Love and Death
Manhattan
The Purple Rose of Cairo

Then again, I even liked Alice, so take these with high doses of sodium chloride.

The trailer for Match Point looks intriguing, although all I could think about during it was "this seems just like Closer.

How can anyone not pause on the remote when they trip across Annie Hall?

Note to the designers (and I'm sure there are many ; ) reading this, please bring back that menswear look. Lots of us love it.

Hello. I'm currently at chasecuts. I'll be here for the next 5 minutes, then I'll be at espn.com. I should be there for 15 minutes, and then I can be reached at thehun.com. I should be there the rest of the evening.

Sometimes when I'm driving... on the road at night... I see two headlights coming toward me. Fast. I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on into the oncoming car. I can anticipate the explosion. The sound of shattering glass. The... flames rising out of the flowing gasoline.
