Crank Calls to God

Prayer might be powerful, but evidently it's no methamphetamine.

Remember all the praise-be news stories that circulated months ago about Ashley Smith, the woman who was taken hostage by courthouse gunman Brian Nichols and supposedly calmed his murderous heart by praying with him?

Well, turns out it was all about the power of crank. As AP reports:

"In her book, Unlikely Angel ... Smith says Nichols had her bound on her bed with masking tape and an extension cord. She says he asked for marijuana, but she did not have any, and she dug into her illegal stash of crystal meth instead."

Hey, whatever works.

My mother, of course, bought me the purpose-driven life following this incident. when i was younger and had one of my first solo apartments, she also insisted my father install bars on the windows. Now, 15 years later, she thought this book could somehow protect me against crazy inmates on the run. Every week my mother asks me if i'm reading it and every week i say no. so when this story moved on the wire, i immediately called her and asked her to send along the second half of her anti-crime kit or accept the fact that i would not read the book. i won.

Well if it wasn't for the good lord we wouldn't have that crystal meth to soothe our gunmen now would we?
